It's a new year and for the first time ever, WWE kicked it off with a PPV. Yes, there has been New Year's Revolution in the past, but even that dormant PPV has never taken place on the very first day of the year. When you name a show Day 1, then you have no choice but to hold it on New Year's Day. Also, as has been customary for years by this point, the show to kick off the new year needed a kickoff show of its own.

Ridge Holland's Broken Nose

Day 1's kick-off show match pitted Ricochet and Cesaro against Sheamus and Ridge Holland. A big stage for the English NXT call-up, and one he didn't get to take advantage of for very long at all. The former rugby league star suffered a nasty-looking injury early in the match. One that couldn't be treated at ringside and needed him to be taken backstage.

The injury occurred following a mistimed assisted flip from Ricochet, which you can check out in the tweet below. Holland has his read raised off the mat, probably where he is bracing himself to take the move. However, his head being raised resulted in Ricochet's boot and then his shin connecting with Holland's face. One of those two blows broke his nose and while it isn't visible in the gif below, there was quite a lot of blood to go along with it.

Sheamus Doesn't Need A Partner

That left Sheamus to fight alone, and he did a great job of doing so. The Celtic Warrior won the match, which might well mean the victory was intended for Holland. Hopefully, the Brit recovers quickly and he can get back on track. It's entirely possible the main reason he was removed from the match was due to how much his nose was bleeding.

Holland has had some pretty bad luck when it comes to poorly timed injuries. Not long after he was moved from NXT UK to NXT, he suffered a brutal leg break that kept him on the sidelines for almost a year. Clearly WWE sees something in Holland as despite most of his NXT stay falling by the wayside thanks to that injury, he has still been called up to the main roster.
