The New England Patriots have awarded offensive lineman Shaq Mason a whopping five-year extension worth $50 million, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Drafted in the fourth round by the Patriots in 2015, the 310-pound guard has become an anchor on New England's offensive line. He won a ring with them in Super Bowl 51, then helped the Patriots get back to the big game last season, in what was a 41-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Mason generated a solid 81.6 grade from Pro Football Focus in 2017, which fell into their "above average" category. PFF ranked New England's offensive line as the 11th-best last season, and only center David Andrews (81.8) earned a better grade in the trenches than Mason did.
New England will need to get the most out of Mason, Andrews and company in 2017. Rookie offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn tore his Achilles in the team's preseason game against the Eagles two weeks ago, and he will miss the entire 2018 campaign.

The Patriots have underwent some major changes in the offseason. Bill Belichick traded star wideout Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams, while 'Playoff' Danny Amendola signed with the Miami Dolphins. Cornerback Malcolm Butler joined the Tennessee Titans, and starting running back Dion Lewis followed suit.
But in extending Mason, Belichick ensures that the offensive line that's protected Tom Brady well remains in tact for 2018 and beyond. The 41-year-old obviously won't be playing forever, and he has hinted at possibly retiring in the future, wanting to spend more time with his family.
A top-notch offensive line must be in place for the Patriots next season, if they're to make another run at the Lombardi Trophy. Mason is by far the MVP of that unit, so the extension was well-deserved.
